6 leverage points against biodiversity loss

Using a systems-based approach, the Brainforest Biodiversity Lab, together with around 40 stakeholders, has identified six leverage points against biodiversity loss in rainforests:

1) Improve support and legal structure: Inefficient and non-transparent legal structures and bureaucratic hurdles need to be overcome to enable biodiversity-positive activities. Supporting local, regional, and national governments to develop biodiversity-positive solutions is a key leverage point.

2) Expand biodiversity monitoring: One barrier for investors, institutions, and governments to invest in biodiversity is the lack of data on the outcomes of implemented efforts. The development of biodiversity monitoring and measurement tools is therefore an important leverage point.

3) Strengthen communication and technical training: A lack of communication and means of learning across stakeholder groups is a crucial limitation for upscaling biodiversity-positive initiatives. To effective forests protection, it is crucial to integrate knowledge from different levels (e.g. local knowledge, academia, etc.).

4) Increase the monetary value of standing forests: Physical, institutional, and digital market constraints influence the income opportunities of local communities. One leverage point is to incentivize the development of scalable, sustainable, and biodiversity-positive initiatives that make less sustainable activities unattractive.

5) Enable standardization and verification of biodiversity-positive activities: Investment decisions are based in part on risk analysis. There is therefore a need for standardized methods of monitoring, reporting, and evaluation of the positive impact of initiatives and interventions for biodiversity.

6) Improve infrastructure and accessibility: The marketability of a product is affected by inadequate or lack of infrastructure (e.g. internet access). Supporting access to infrastructure is therefore a leverage point for gaining a competitive advantage in the markets.
