Webtools for Greater Biodiversity in Real Estate Projects

To systematically integrate biodiversity into the planning, construction, renovation, and management of real estate and make it measurable and manageable, the webtools BioValues™ and BioValues Toolbox™ were jointly developed by Forum Biodiversity Switzerland and SiedlungsNatur GmbH. 

BioValues™ enables a standardized assessment of a property’s current condition and potential for biodiversity enhancement. The BioValues Toolbox™ complements this assessment with practical knowledge, proven tools, and concrete measures. Since 2020, the methodology has been tested in over 70 projects and on 50 properties and can now also be applied to existing properties and entire real estate portfolios. 

Greater biodiversity on and around properties creates habitats for animals and plants while also providing benefits for people, such as reducing heat and improving rainwater management. The webtools make it possible to integrate biodiversity into real estate planning and management in a scientifically sound and practical way. 

The project also contributed to further embed biodiversity in the real estate industry and shows that the condition of biodiversity and its potential for improvement can be identified particularly effectively when all relevant stakeholders, from portfolio management to green space maintenance, are involved.
