Wild Pastures — The Untapped Biodiversity Potential of Switzerland

The aim of the Wild Pastures Switzerland association is to initiate and secure the large-scale, year-round extensively used pastures in Switzerland by robust breeds such as Highland cattle and Konik horses. The first phase of the project The Untapped Biodiversity Potential of Switzerland, supported by Somaha Foundation, aims to establish at least four pilot-pastures in different habitats and biogeographical regions to promote biodiversity.

In the lower altitudes of Switzerland, extensive grazing landscapes have largely disappeared. With the reintroducing of this form of grazing, the animal and plant species that depend on it are returning to Switzerland's lower altitudes. Through their natural trampling and grazing behavior, these animals create biologically valuable habitats, all variations between sparse forest and open land. They promote the dispersal of seeds, increase the abundance of flowers and insects and create open ground habitats for wild bees and birds.

More information about the project can be found on the website of Wild Pastures Switzerland.
