Practical Learning Guide to Localization

The Swiss Red Cross (SRC), in partnership with Somaha Foundation, has developed the practical Learning Guide Supporting Organisational Transformation in the Light of Localization.

Drawing on SRC’s long-term experience working with national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, the guide consolidates experiences, case studies, and practical steps. It provides tested tools and actionable recommendations to help NGOs and other organizations strengthen their organizational structures, develop partnership models, and sustainably empower local organizations as leaders and co-creators. Key thematic priorities include governance, leadership and strategy, resource mobilization, institutional preparedness and development, project management, and volunteer management. The guide also highlights enablers and challenges of locally led action, providing practical insights on how local organizations can take the lead in collaborative initiatives that are contextually appropriate, durable, and impactful.

The goal of the Learning Guide is to provide NGOs and other organizations with a solid foundation to strengthen locally led structures, rethink existing processes, and integrate localization into their organizational practices. In doing so, local organizations are empowered to further develop their structures, processes, and capacities, enabling them to carry out their work independently and effectively over the long term.
