Social Income Launches New Platform
Social Income has launched a new platform that allows other NGOs to set up their own direct cash transfer programs.
Social Income is a Zurich-based organization run by volunteers that provides direct cash transfers via mobile money to people living in poverty in the Global South since 2020. All programs are implemented by the organization’s own country offices and local program partners.
The new platform makes it easier for other NGOs to make direct payments to people living in poverty. At the same time, individuals can donate 1% of their income toward a basic income.
Direct cash transfers are among the most thoroughly researched tools for combating poverty. Recipients can decide for themselves how to use the money and what they need most urgently. For NGOs, however, implementing such direct payments presents various challenges. Before the first payment can be made, partnerships with mobile money providers, data protection strategies, and a system for measuring impact are needed. Social Income’s platform provides the necessary infrastructure for this. Since recipients are already verified and registered locally, organizations can implement their own programs with significantly less effort. As a result, a larger portion of the funds allocated can go directly to the people in need. In the long term, the platform aims to help more people living in poverty access financial support and make their own decisions about how to use it.
Further information about the platform and the funding partner can be found on the website of Social Income.
